Why we've changed

When we offer something to our customers, it's because we use it ourselves and it suits the way we grow. At Barrita, we believe good growers never stop evolving. No medium is perfect, and there's always room to do better. We've seen that with our move to deflasking into cupcakes, and now we're taking the next step by changing our main growing medium to a coir-based organic mix.

What we're seeing

Our trials have been genuinely exciting. On our Cymbidiums, this mix has produced some of the best root growth we've ever seen in the nursery.

What's in the mix

  • 5–15 mm coir chip: an open, chunky structure that holds its shape and lets roots breathe
  • Coir and pith: fine material that holds steady, even moisture around the roots
  • Perlite: keeps the mix light, free-draining and open
  • A touch of charcoal: helps keep the mix fresh

Air-filled porosity: 45–50%

That gives plenty of air around the roots while still holding enough moisture to keep them actively growing. It's the balance we were looking for.

Prepared properly

All our coir is soaked and washed before mixing, so it's ready to pot straight into.

What we grow in it

We use this mix for our Cymbidiums, Zygopetalums and Sarcochilus. It's well suited to any orchids that like their roots kept evenly moist rather than drying out hard between waterings.

A note on watering

Coir holds moisture differently from bark. If you're switching over, expect to water less often than you're used to. Check the mix before watering rather than sticking to a fixed schedule, and let it approach just-damp before watering again. Most problems after a media change come from overwatering, not underwatering.

WE CHOOSE THE BEST PLANT AVAILABLE

We understand that you want the best possible plants. While it's possible that a leaf might have a minor chew mark or blemish, rest assured that our experienced team carefully selects the finest plants available for each order. Keep in mind that each cross has its own unique characteristics, so some plants may be smaller than others.
